OUR STORY
Music, Movement, and Art have always surrounded me, and since childhood they have been an essential component of my life. Coming from a long line of musicians, artists, and dancers, I still remember as a young child the awe and wonder of seeing my family members express themselves through the arts, the delight I discovered upon participating myself, and the confidence I developed from further study of the arts at school. Recognizing the profound impact that the arts promote in developing creative freedom and self-awareness and its power to unite us all, HipKids is dedicated to partnering with schools to ensure every child has the opportunity to learn, express, create, and feel the joy the arts can bring. HipKids was conceived in this spirit, and our dedicated team continues to promote our mission.
Laura Sabini, Founder/Director
Laura Sabini grew up in a family with a love for the Arts. Music, dance, and art were all a part of daily life and shaped who Laura was from a young age.
Her mother was one of 9 children, each of whom played instruments. Her mom played piano, her uncle played jazz sax in the Big Band circuit, and family gatherings often became jam sessions and singalongs.
Her dad, a classical music aficionado, always had music playing and loved taking the family to the ballet and the symphony. Laura danced around the house, trying to be like her big sister, who was a ballet dancer. Since her father studied Art History at University of London, he relished taking the family to museums, and Laura appreciated how the arts could evoke deep feelings that stood the test of time. Her other sister became a painter and sculptor, and her two brothers photographers, each one finding their chosen form of expression through art.
At the age of five, Laura began studying piano at the New England Conservatory of Music, and dancing at The Jeanette Neil Dance Studio soon followed. Throughout her life, Laura has performed in theater venues and has sung various types of music—gospel, classical, musical theater, jazz, and a cappella.
A graduate of Trinity College in Hartford with a degree in Psychology, Laura focused on counseling children and completed internships at Hartford Children’s Medical Center and the Institute of Living. After graduation, she lived in Italy where she performed as a jazz singer and continued to work with children, always using music as an educational tool. Upon returning to the US in 2000, Laura began teaching music and movement classes to preschool children in Cambridge and Boston using her original songs. She studied with the Center for Music in Princeton, New Jersey, and became a certified Music Together Director.
Over the years, she has trained many new teachers and expanded her music classes for children throughout Greater Boston.
The scope widened beyond teaching Music Together when Laura created GroovyBabyMusic™, which offers additional research-based programs to children in the community. Laura continues her commitment to bring the joy of music and movement to every child, offering countless scholarships for her classes.
Now, with HipKids™, Laura brings after-school classes with a cool vibe! Her talented teachers all share Laura’s dream—to make learning music and movement and art a fun and enriching experience for children. When she’s not teaching children, Laura sings jazz with the Laura Love Jazz Trio in Boston, and sings and dances with her daughter, Cléa Luna Carolina, who inspires her everyday!
